Alderman: Signs Cubs want at Wrigley are too big

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The proposed $500 million renovation plan for Wrigley Field went before the city's landmark commission Thursday morning, but the highly debated plan for a 6,000 square foot jumbotron and other signage was not on the agenda.

This after Alderman Tom Tunney asked the Cubs to reduce the size if they wanted his support for the project.

"We're not there yet, but we're moving in an expeditious manner to give the Rickett's family and the Cubs franchise the confidence that being at Clark and Addison is the most important corner for them in the world to win the World Series," Tunney said.

The Cubs proposed adding exterior additions as well as more bleachers. They also plan to replace the Captain Morgan Club with a two-story building topped with signs and a deck.

Tunney told the commission he's concerned over the proposed addition of a wall to Sheffield near Waveland. The proposal says it could move seven feet out, well into the sidewalk area where pedestrians walk back and forth.

Residents were mixed about the idea.

"It's a pretty big sidewalk and besides when it's game day, they close off the streets so I don't think it would be a huge impediment to pedestrian traffic," Joel Kulla says.

"Where are we supposed to walk? In the street? Not a good idea," James Scot says.

The Cubs will have to come back to the commission in July to present an updated proposal on the jumbotron and other signage at the historic ballpark.
