Evelyn Lowery: Supreme Court Voting Rights Act ruling a 'setback'

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A local civil rights leader said the Supreme Court's decision voiding parts of the Voting Rights Act is a major setback for everyone.

Evelyn Gibson Lowery has fought for voter rights for over 40 years.  She said she was taken aback by the Supreme Court ruling that struck down a key component that provided federal oversight at polls, mainly in the South.

"I just feel that this is going to have to be something that's going to stimulate us as a group, as people, to get back to the streets and march and do just what we did before – and more," Lowery said.

Chief Justice John Roberts defended the decision by saying the coverage used today is based on decades old data; he also said Congress remains free to make more contemporary changes.

Many have applauded the move, but not Lowery, who remembers a day when a jar of marbles was used to determine who could vote.

"You had to tell how marbles were in that jar to be able to vote – impossible things that just made it completely impossible to vote," Lowery said.

Several organizations, including Lowery's SCLC Women, Inc,, have vowed to mobilize, and for lLowery, that may mean returning to practices used in the late 50s.

Despite what Lowery calls "the Supreme Court Setback," she still holds on to hope. She says she has to for those who paid to push the voting rights movement forward.

Lowery is planning a series of voting rights rallies to educate the public about what the Supreme Court ruling means to the state of Georgia.
