Chinatown purse snatchings increase on South Side: Alert

Police have issued an alert warning residents of a series of forcible purse snatchings over the past week in and around the Chinatown neighborhood on the South Side.

The offender -- who often emerges from a vehicle -- approaches one to two female victims and takes their purses by physical force, the alert said. The offender then flees in the vehicle.

The robberies have occurred in the:

• 300 block of West 25th Place on June 21 about 10:30 a.m.;

• 400 block of West 25th Place on June 22 about 12:47 p.m.;

• 4500 block of South Western Avenue on June 23 about 11:20 a.m.;

• 300 block of West 24th Place on June 24 about 7:45 a.m.; and

• 500 block of West 26th Street on June 24 about 2:50 p.m.

The description of the suspect varies, but generally he has been described as a white or Hispanic man 25-40, 5-foot-5 to 6-foot-4 and 170-225 pounds.
