CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Chicago police officer was conscious and talking after emergency crews cut him out of a South Side wreck involving a squad car and a garbage truck Tuesday night.

The crash happened about 9:15 p.m. near the intersection of 43rd Street and Ashland Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien said, citing preliminary information.

The police officer was driving a Ford Crown Victoria police sedan, "fortunately equipped with side airbags," Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said.

Emergency crews had to cut the officer out of the wreckage, but found him conscious and alert, Langford said. He was being treated at John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County for non-life-threatening injuries.

The police vehicle and a garbage truck collided, though details on how the crash happened were not yet known, authorities said.
