WHEELING, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A small plane missed a northwest suburban airport and crash landed yards from an apartment complex Monday in north suburban Wheeling.

The twin-engine Beechcraft Super King Air 200 missed Chicago Executive Airport about 8:30 p.m. and landed northwest of the airfield on Wolf Road -- just yards from the Foxboro Apartment complex, the Pioneer Press is reporting.

The aircraft was trying to land at the airport when it went down, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro said.

The small plane landed upright, tangling in a tree about two blocks north of Hintz Road.

The pilot -- the only apparent passenger -- emerged unscathed and was quickly whisked away by Wheeling police.

No one on the ground was hurt, and no buildings were damaged, Molinaro said.

The plane is registered to a limited liability company based in Clarksville, Tenn., according to FAA records.

Eleven year-old cousins Kayla Gaston and Jakaila Johnson watched as the plane approached on a southwest heading over the apartment complex.

"Normally those planes come over the lake, and come down, but we saw it wasn't going to come down where it was supposed to," Jakaila said. "We ran inside the house and screamed, ‘A plane crashed!' . . . We thought it might blow up."
