Little girl's quick actions save her family from house fire

Posted: Updated:

A home on Audubon Drive in DeKalb County is blackened and boarded up after a fire swept through it in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

But, despite that, a DeKalb County father is praising his young daughter's quick thinking for saving their family from a fire that broke out inside their home in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.
John Massey says his little girl knew what to do. He says because she bravely did it their family not only  escaped the house, but did so unharmed, too.

"It was my daughter, she smelled smoke, came in and woke me up and said ‘Dad, the house is on fire,' and I ran into the back room and, sure enough, the house was on fire," Massey said.

While definitely a scary situation for almost anyone, it was likely especially so for such a young girl. But, Lily says she knew she had to act.

Massey said, "We were just trying to get out safely and everything. We didn't realize how bad the fire had gotten. It looks like it may have started in the attic."

When asked what was going through her mind while saving her family, Lily said, "That we lost everything and that we basically have to start all over."

Her father replied, "But, at least we're safe, sweetie."

In the midst of loss and sadness, Lily is lucky enough to grow from learning a valuable life lesson.

The family of three, in addition to their cat, did make it safely out of their burning home. They're being placed in a hotel until they can get things resolved with their insurance company.
