Cradle the thought: What one person can do

With grass three feet tall, the Dequindre-Emery Playlot on Detroit's east side had become grossly overgrown.

George Beaird finally said enough is enough. With his personal mower, a Father's Day gift, he has been cutting the grass for four days straight.

"I'm just a one man army. I want to get it done. I won't stop, and it's all go, no quit," he said.

Then that one man army got some recruits.

"He was one guy with one lawn mower, so I figured I'd go get my lawnmower and help," said Shayel Jackson.

Several neighbors decided to pitch in, raking and bagging the grass, mowing the taller weeds in the back and even cleaning up and mowing outside the fence.

"It's our neighborhood. We've got to take back our neighborhood. The city won't help us do it sometimes, so the neighbors got to get out here, and they got to help out," Jackson said.

"Sow a seed, you'll get a seed," Beaird said. "Our children need to have the best so they can grow up and they can give back also."

The team of volunteer mowers still has quite the task before them. Beaird hopes to turn the park over to neighborhood kids on Sunday morning.
