Georgia GOP leaders upset with state right to life group

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Some prominent Georgia conservatives are blasting Georgia Right to Life.  The Georgia group has campaigned against a new far-reaching House anti-abortion bill because it says that the bill doesn't save enough lives.

Georgia Right to Life says it's all or nothing.

"If all aren't protected, none our protected,' said Suzanne Ward of Georgia Right to Life.

The group fought the recently-passed House bill that banned abortions after 20 weeks because it made exceptions for rape and incest.

"Rape and incest is a horrible scenario and we have the utmost sympathy for anyone in those circumstances, but we can't condone murder in those circumstances," Ward said.

But prominent Georgia pro-life conservatives, like RedState's Erick Erickson and Peach Pundit editor Charlie Harper are blasting Georgia Right to Life.

"Somehow saving 99.4 percent of children is not good enough for Georgia Right to Life," said Harper. "So the blood of those kids is now on their hands, that's what their stance means."

Two Georgia congressmen sided with Georgia Right to Life and voted against the bill, but it still passed the House on a strict party line vote, including seven Georgia Republicans.

"Georgia Right to Life will stay the course with our life of the mother exception only," said Ward.

"They're not even about trying to pass legislation anymore. They're now basically making sure people agree with them and playing political games, rather than trying to save the lives of unborn children," Harper said.

While the bill passed the House, experts don't expect it to pass the Democrat-controlled Senate. Even if it did, President Barack Obama would likely veto it.
