CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Police are asking for the public's help locating a vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run early Friday in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.

Officers responded at 3:40 a.m. to the 6000 block of South Yale Avenue to a report of a pedestrian struck by a car, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said. A 40-year-old man was dead at the scene, Gaines said.

Police issued a community alert early Saturday asking for any information about the identity of the driver or the vehicle. The car continued southbound on Yale Avenue after the accident, the alert said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the man's death, but said as of about 9:30 a.m. he remained unidentified.

Police had no description of the vehicle that struck him, nor have any witnesses come forward as of later Friday morning.

Anyone with information about the hit-and-run can call detectives at (312) 745-4521 or submit an anonymous tip to TIPSOFT.COM.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
