Bartow County couple's racehorses killed in Oklahoma tornado

BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. -

A Bartow County family is devastated after losing eight of their cherished racehorses two weeks ago in the deadly tornado in Moore, Okla.

The horse barn at the Bartow County home of Jon Ellis and Jennifer short is now empty.

"It's just really quiet and it hurts. There's a lot of pain that we're dealing with right now," Ellis said.

Just a few weeks after winning their first-ever races in Florida, Ellis took the horses to Oklahoma, where they ended up right in the path of the Moore tornado.

"I thank God I had went to lunch," Ellis said.

But his eight prized racehorses were among the 100 horses who died in the storm.

"Our little business was blessed by the Lord and we were growing and it was going to be great. And then to have that happen and you have everything you had invested – it's really tough," Ellis said.

"Seeing them, really like our children and the potential in them never to be realized," Short.

Derby Day Delight is too young to race, so she didn't make the trip to Oklahoma. Now she's the only thing left of the business that this couple poured everything into.

The horses weren't insured. Jon and Jennifer say they're regular people trying to compete in a rich man's business, and with a baby just a month away, they have to start over.

"We went from 0 to 60 in like two or three years. We were really fixing to get off the ground and then it went from 60 to 0 in a matter of seconds," Ellis said.

Friends have set up a page where people can donate to help Jon and Jennifer get their horse training business back on their feet. Click here for more information.
