SEWARD, Ill. (Associated Press) -

Winnebago County authorities say residents near a chemical plant in the town of Seward are being evacuated after a fire and explosion.

The Rockford Register Star reports that dozens of agencies reported to the plant in Seward, about 18 miles west of Rockford after an explosion was reported just after 12:30 p.m. Sunday. A sheriff's department spokesman says one worker suffered a minor injury.

Sheriff's Sgt. Anthony Miceli says that residents within a 2-mile radius of the plant -- called Nova-Kem --have been evacuated, and are being sent to Pecatonica High School until further notice.

He said one worker suffered a minor injury.

The newspaper reports that smoke could be seen for nearly a mile, and emergency officials were worried about airborne chemicals.

No other information was immediately available.
