NHL warns Blackhawk fans about counterfeit merchandise, tickets

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Blackhawks gear is some of the hottest stuff going these days in Chicago, and if the team keeps winning, the sales will continue to surge.

"Oh my goodness, it's been unbelievable," said Sports Authority Sales Manager Jack Kleisner. "Particularly 24 hours before the game and the day of the game, it's like a frenzy in the store."

But the NHL, which officially licenses merchandise, is concerned about scam artists trying to tap into playoff hockey fever and selling stuff that is cheap in quality, often just like the price.

"When you're buying something from someone who sets up a folding table  on a street corner or walking around the parking lot with a duffle bag full of t-shirts you can be pretty sure you're not getting genuine merchandise," said NHL Enterprises VP Tom Prochnow.

The NHL is reminding fans to always look for the holograms which will appear on all licensed gear.

And shirts and hats are not the only things that might be fake. while a lot of tickets are the real thing, legitimate brokers warn that sites like Craigslist are often used by con men to sell tickets that will leave fans out in the cold.

You got to be very careful where you get them from," said Max Waisvisz of Gold Coast Tickets. "You want to get them from the original source, most likely the season ticket holder. And if you do buy from a ticket broker, you want to go with a reputable ticket broker."
