Indy drivers visit sick kids at Children's Hospital of Michigan

DETROIT (WJBK) -

Indy drivers took part in the Racing for Kids program Thursday at Children's Hospital of Michigan.

Ed Carpenter and Josef Newgarden helped put smiles on the faces of some sick kids. Both wheelmen understand that even just a minute of their time can go a long way in assisting recovery.

"I know how cool it is to see the kids and just make their day a little bit better," said Newgarden.

"It takes their minds off of some often very difficult treatments," said J. Patrick Wright, executive director of Racing for Kids. "Sometimes it's even better for the parents because they haven't seen their child smile in maybe a couple of weeks, and all of a sudden they see their son or daughter really happy."

"My wife and I have a huge appreciation for all the work that happens here, and any time we can come out and be a part of these events and give back a little bit, it's very rewarding," Carpenter said.

Racing for the Kids has touched 25,000 children since the program started in 1989.
