Teen comes forward in Lake Lanier hit-and-run boat crash

Posted: Updated:
Authorities say a teenager has turned himself in to police in connection with a weekend hit-and-run accident on Lake Lanier.  The crash took place late Friday night.

Georgia Department of Natural Resources officials say an 18-year-old has admitted that he may have hit a smaller boat with his boat.  They say the Sea-Doo jet boat that was hit was drifting with its running lights on near Old Federal Park at the time of the accident.  Two people on board the Sea-Doo said they saw the boat coming at them.   The larger boat took off after the impact.

"This very well could have been a double fatality. When you look at the damage on the boats, your first thing you are thinking is, ‘Gosh, I hope they made it," said Sgt. Mike Burgamy of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

The crash sent the man and woman on board, both of whom are in their 20s, to the hospital.  Their injuries range from facial fractures to deep cuts on their hands and feet.  One of the victims has been released from the hospital, the other remained there as of Monday night.

Authorities say the teenager and his father went to the Hall County Jail, where he admitted to hitting something, but he told investigators he didn't see or hear anything.  The investigation into the crash continues.

Investigators have not released the names of anyone involved in the accident.  There's no word yet on whether the teenager will face charges.
