2 firefighters injured in Columbus warehouse blaze

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - Two Columbus firefighters are recovering after they suffered second-degree burns while battling a warehouse fire.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports the injured firefighters were on a loading dock outside the burning warehouse late Friday when an explosion blew them backward.

Fire Chief Jeff Meyer says firefighter Chris Burris was treated for his burns at a Columbus hospital before being released. The chief says firefighter David Smith remained at the Medical Center on Saturday. He not only suffered second-degree burns but also was awaiting surgery for a broken ankle.

It took 25 firefighters nearly two hours to bring the fire under control at the former Burnham warehouse, a building that's about a century old. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
