I hope you have plans to enjoy this Memorial Day Weekend. I'm going to watch a couple of White Sox games and listen to old Rolling Stones tunes, in advance of going to their Tuesday night concert at the United Center. I also plan to spend a few moments thinking about those who made my "pursuit of happiness" possible.
It's not as easy as you might think to determine how many American military personnel have died in all our wars? For one thing, it depends on what we mean by "war." Do we count obscure operations in far flung places where there was no formal declaration by Congress and the President? Do we count the Confederates who tried to dismember these United States? If we do, the total number of our war dead approaches 1.2 million. With hundreds of thousands of Americans still stationed all across the globe, it's a number, unfortunately, that continues to grow.
