King College Prep students connect globally through virtual concert

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Three schools in three different cities perform a live concert, streaming online for the world to see.

"We are streaming with two other schools," King College Prep student Kiara Crumble explains. "One in Deer River, Minnesota and another in Los Angeles and we will be performing and they also will so it will be choirs and various bands and maybe orchestras and dancers and things of that nature."

So you understand why Kiara Crumble on percussion tells us she's nervous.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. College Prep High School's jazz band is featured in Cisco's Bridging the Gap Concert, combining breakthrough technology and an innovative interactive platform.

"It's a great chance to really connect with other students across the country," Crumble says.

It's also a way to save music programs in schools facing budget shortfalls.

"It allows music instruction from one place to be broadcast to several different locations," says Cisco Account Manager Jerry Rocco. "That's exactly how Fred Martin does it in Los Angeles. He has a unit that does it and broadcast to seven schools."

"It's an option and it reminds me of when I was in high school, I also played in the jazz band so this is an opportunity for our students to participate in a program that is worthwhile, that is worth saving," says Principal Shontae Higginbottom.

Kiara Crumble and others are getting an early start, performing with celebrity headliner and multi-platinum, Grammy award-winning recording artist Faith Evans. Ensembles cities away perform as one as technology continues to shape education and the arts.

"This is the future of education and to open up the four walls of a school and to provide a rich experience is just awesome," says Rocco.
