Merrillville police shoot trucker outside Planned Parenthood

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Merrillville police officer shot a man Monday afternoon when the two got into a fight in the parking lot of the Merrillville Planned Parenthood office.

The man was sitting in a semi truck with an Oregon license plate when the officer approached him, said spokesman for the Major Crimes Task Force Bob Byrd. The man struck the officer, who returned fire. Both men were hospitalized and in unknown condition Monday night, Byrd said.

The Major Crimes Task Force was called in since the incident involved an officer discharging his weapon, the POst-Tribune is reporting.

Byrd said detectives are in the process of questioning those involved at the hospital and the Merrillville Police Department to get a clearer idea of what spurred the altercation.

Byrd said the semi was searched, but the refrigerated trailer was empty. He's not sure if the officer was on duty and providing security at the clinic, which attracts anti-abortion protestors.

As far as police know, the man had no contact with anyone inside Planned Parenthood.
