Chicago Police Department graduates largest class in 8 years

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The largest Chicago police recruiting class in nearly a decade is one step closer to hitting the streets. The question many are asking: will it be the answer to the violence seen in the city?

105 new police recruits have taken just the oath. It's the largest Chicago police recruit class to graduate in 8 years and families and their new officers couldn't contain their excitement.

"I'm really happy today," says father Rafat Khan. "My daughter has become a police officer and I'm proud of that."

His daughter, officer Salma Khan says she's fulfilling a lifelong dream.

"I can't wait to go out there and take care of people on the streets," new officer Salma Khan says. "And I'm very excited about doing the street patrol as well because I think it's very necessary to do so, to get the crime rate down."

Residents in Chicago are ready for officers like Khan. The new officers will train for 12 weeks with the police superintendent's "operation impact," which sends officers on foot patrols in Chicago's 20 most dangerous areas.

"I think it'll be a good idea for them to start doing more street patrolling and maybe people will see that they care," says resident Candace Holmes.

Demarcius Crenshaw lives in the Gresham neighborhood--an area where police are already implementing "operation impact."

"People tend to stop doing what they're doing, if they're doing something wrong when they see a police car versus when they're walking on foot they say, 'hey, I caught you, I'm not rolling past,'" says Crenshaw. "So, I definitely think putting them on foot patrol, that's a big plus."

But, the first Vice President of the Fraternal Order of Police says it may not be enough.

"I think until we get back to those numbers where the department was at before the mayor cut it," says Bill Dougherty. "It's going to be difficult to do that because right now they're just replacing the guys that retired 3 or 4 years ago, so we have a lot of catching up to do."
