Fugitive on the run for a decade nabbed in Buckhead

Posted: Updated:

Authorities captured a fugitive on the run for more than a decade in Buckhead. Police say the Buckhead family of 37-year-old Mazen Diamond had no idea he was a fugitive from Arizona.

Diamond has been on the run for 11 years after a sexual assault conviction in Tempe, Az.

Mazen and his cousin, 40-year old Antonio Sanchez, were convicted in 2002 for drugging women they met at bars, taking them back to their apartment near the Arizona State Campus and sexually assaulting them while they videotaped it. Mazen was an ASU student at the time.

Diamond escaped Arizona and started a new life in a Buckhead high rise.

"He was located in Buckhead. We took him in custody early in the morning," said Inspector Gavin Duffy with the U.S. Marshals.

Authorities said that no one in Atlanta knew of Diamond's past, including his girlfriend and two children.

"He attempted to start anew, but ultimately, we catch everybody," said Duffy.

Sanchez was captured first in Miami a week and a half ago. That led U.S. Marshals to Mazen.

"It sends a message we don't stop looking, which we don't. This is what the Marshals service does and U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Forces across the country. We simply don't stop once the warrant is in our hands. One year to five, 10, 15 years -- we're still coming," Duffy said.

Mazen is being held in the Fulton County Jail but he will be extradited to Arizona.
