Urban Prairie Waldorf School, a developing Waldorf school in Chicago, seeks a native Spanish speaker to be part-time Spanish Instructor beginning in the 2013-14 school year. The instructor will teach 11 lessons per week in grades 1-5. Lessons are 50 minutes.
Our school is young and energetic, with an entrepreneurial culture. We opened our doors in 2009 with nine enthusiastic families and have grown to more than 50 children in grades 1-4. Urban Prairie seeks a self-starting candidate who likes the challenge of steering his or her own ship within a strong and growing fleet. We welcome new and experienced candidates with a pioneering spirit.
As the school grows each year, the Spanish program will also grow, with lessons in grades 1-8. In the lower grades, language lessons are three times per week; upper grades have language twice per week. The Spanish instructor will devise a developmentally appropriate language program inspired by the teachings of Rudolf Steiner. We seek a teacher whose love of teaching will create a harmonious classroom environment and lesson rhythm. The instructor joins a faculty that includes Mandarin, Handwork, Eurythmy, Music, Woodworking, and Movement/Games instructors.
Responsibilities and reporting
The instructor will monitor the performance of students, recognize problems, and coordinate with administrators, other teachers, and parents to address concerns. The instructor reports to the Teacher Search & Support Committee of the Faculty and Board of Directors, is responsible for maintaining the materials and equipment needed for Spanish classes, and will manage a budget. Festivals and class meetings are attended when possible. There are paid all-faculty meetings every other week.
$30 / lesson, plus 5% increase per year of teaching in field of specialty. Faculty meetings are paid at the lesson rate. All part-time instructors receive an annual professional development stipend of $300.
