3-year-old Cumming boy in need of kidney transplant

CUMMING, Ga. -

A 3-year-old from Cumming is badly in need of a kidney transplant. His family faces tens of thousands of dollars in medical expenses, but they're not asking you to help them.

They want you to support all children who need life-saving organ transplants.

Ephraim Harding is a typical 3-year-old. He loves to play with his siblings and cousins and fancies himself a pirate.

But Ephraim was born with an atypical health condition.

"He is in need of a kidney transplant. He was diagnosed with bilateral renal hypodisplasia, which basically just means that his kidneys never developed properly," said Ephraim's mother, Rebecca Harding.

Rebecca and Seth got the sobering news 15 weeks into the pregnancy of their first-born. But three years later, they have hope because preliminary tests show dad is a match.

"I love the fact that I will be able to give life again to my kid. And I guess, most parents only get that to happen once," said Seth Harding.

For now, Ephraim has to get regular dialysis treatments and take a litany of medications that are often not covered by insurance.

"It's an estimated $45,000 that is basically looking at the whole picture of things," Rebecca Harding said. "After insurance."

Ephraim will likely need multiple transplants in his lifetime. That's why the Hardings joined forces with the Children's Organ Transplant Association, a non-profit group that raises money support families of child organ transplant patients.

"It released a lot of anxiety surrounding the situation. And it makes us feel better too that we can help other people's kids – knowing that we've got our own to take care of too," Seth said.
