ATLANTA -

Lawyers for Atlanta City Council member Cleta Winslow spoke publicly talk about her arrest for the first time on Thursday.

Winslow was picked up while allegedly driving home from the SPACE Restaurant and Bar. An officer says he saw Winslow driving on the wrong side of the road and stopped her.

Police say the council woman admitted to having a few drinks, but refused a field sobriety test. But in the police report, an officer said when Winslow was stopped, he found a strong odor of alcohol. Her eyes were bloodshot and the officer described Winslow as appearing distant, and swaying when she attempted to walk. They say she had two dirty martinis.

Attorneys for Winslow advised her not to comment on the police report.

"I'm glad that no one was injured and that she's safe. I'm going to let the legal process play out," said Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

Winslow faces charges of DUI, driving on the wrong side of the road, reckless driving, and running a stop sign and red light.

Due to a mix up, Winslow was not present at her first court appearance. At one point she left the courthouse to go to city hall for a budget hearing. It didn't take long for a candidate running for Winslow's seat to appear at city hall voicing his opinion of the arrest.

"To be arrested for DUI in your neighborhood, up the street from a school, that would show personal judgment issues," said District 4 candidate Torry Lewis.

Winslow attended a city council budget meeting on Wednesday. She told FOX 5's Morse Diggs that she was going to continue to do her work because that's what she was elected to do.

Her attorneys say the longtime council member plans to fight the charges, while still working for her constituents.

"Right now Ms. Winslow is pleading not guilty. We're excited and we're eager to see what the evidence will unfold. That will be her plea at this point," said Antavius Weems, Wilson's attorney.

Her legal process may not occur in Atlanta city court. As a council member, Winslow as to vote on the budget and pay the judges. The judge may recuse himself, and the case could be heard elsewhere.
