2 students charged, soccer team benched amid hazing allegations

Posted: Updated:

Two students have been charged and an entire soccer team has been benched after allegations of violent, sexual hazing surfaced in a small Georgia town.

The soccer fields at Gordon Central High School have seen little action after the boys' soccer season was cancelled after allegations of hazing.

"Report of a battery against a male juvenile perpetrated by another male juvenile, This report alleged that the battery was part of a hazing ritual," said Robert Paris, Gordon County's chief deputy sheriff.

Detectives say they learned there were several victims.

After a six week investigation, two students have been charged in the juvenile system, one with aggravated sexual battery and false imprisonment, the other as a party to those crimes.

Investigators say there could be additional charges in other counties because they say that one of the incidents happened on a bus that was carrying students through other counties.

Students say it was the bus driver who reported that incident and that's what led to the coach calling off the season.

Some said that calling off the season was hard on some students.
"That ruined their opportunities and chances of going to the next level to play, so that really hurt a lot of students, a lot of kids," said Larons Winston, a student.

Others praised the quick action of the coach.

"More consequences and maybe this will open eyes to all high school students that it does happen," said Lisa Riel.

The two students being charged have been expelled. Their case is now in the hands of the juvenile court prosecutor.
