High school student recovers from tragic shooting in time for prom

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Prom night is an important one for kids across the country, but for one student it's time to celebrate a second chance at life.

Dressed in all white, there's no doubt 18-year-old Miles Turner V will be the main attraction at his senior prom.

Turner is marking a milestone by attending prom. Just 7 months ago, the Leo Catholic High School football player was shot several times while protecting his cousin from gunfire. Since then, the teen has undergone a tough recovery.

"Just learning how to sit up again, how to do certain stuff, stretch my legs out, all the things I can do with my legs and body," Turner says of the recovery process.

"It was eight gunshots and five remain inside so it basically it didn't totally damage his spine but it nicked his spine," his mother, Angela Turner, explains.

Angela Turner says it's been a struggle to watch her only son and youngest child suffer.

"Just last week he moved his leg so it's just little things that we see that lead us to believe he's going to walk again," Angela says, remaining hopeful.

The high school senior arrived to prom early. He says he wore all white to honor his father; a father who says his son is a hero.

"I don't know too many people who will take a bullet for anybody," Miles Turner IV says. "I don't even know any grown adults who will take a bullet so he's a hero in my eyes although he wasn't able to save his cousin but like I said he's a hero."

Turner's cousin did not survive the shooting and police are still searching for the gunman.

Attending prom is one of two goals for Miles Turner. The next is graduating high school in June.
