Home Invasion, String Of 33 Burglaries Worry Main Line Residents

Posted: Updated:
LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, Pa. -

Twenty four hours after two men tried to pull off a daring mid-day home invasion in the upscale Wynnewood section of Lower Merion, neighbors were still on edge.

"Too close to home," one neighbor told Fox 29.

"It's every homeowners worst nightmare right. That's the scariest scenario you can possibly have," said Frank Burgos outside his Remington Road home.

"I have heard there were a lot of home invasions in the neighborhood, and of course it's very scary," said home owner Karen Dagenais.

Police say when the men came to the front door of this home on Remington Road and no one answered, they went around back and broke in. The homeowner was inside with his wife. He grabbed a handgun, fired several shots at the men and they fled.

"If you got a gun, use it man, yeah," said neighbor Fred Hall. "I mean, you don't want to be nuts about it."

"I guess if you're protecting your family, you have to do what you have to do," another neighbor said.

This was the latest in a string of 33 burglaries across Lower Merion since March 1. Police have made a couple of recent arrests, but detectives say the break-ins increased again in the last couple of weeks.

Lower Merion detectives told FOX 29 that during most of the recent burglaries in town, the suspects have forced their way in through a rear door or sliding glass doors. They've stolen cash and jewelry.

There are community watch patrols here and almost every home has a security system. Residents say now they're taking extra precautions.

"To me the best security measure is a big loud dog and lots of lighting around your home," Burgos explained.

"I think it's a very safe neighborhood, at least I used to think so, now I'm nervous a little bit. I was scared when I heard yesterday," Dagenais said.

Detectives did charge one suspect arrested recently with four burglaries. There has also been a string of 19 burglaries in the past month in the Fifth Police District on the Philadelphia side of City Line Avenue.

Police have no suspects in Thursday's home invasion. They don't know if the suspects were hit by gunfire. They believe the same suspects could be involved in other recent home break ins.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
