FDA decision on morning-after pill sparks controversy

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

It's known by many names like emergency contraception, the morning-after pill or Plan B. The Food and Drug Administration's decision approving its use by girls as young as 15 is sparking controversy.

Dr. Melissa Kottke, the director of Emory University's Jane Fonda Center for Adolescent Reproductive Health, says Plan B not the same as an abortion pill.

"It works to prevent the ovary from releasing an egg. It stops that from happening. And if an egg doesn't come out, then pregnancy can't occur," said Kottke.

There are those who question the safety of Plan B, especially for girls as young as 15. Kottke says it's safe for women of all ages.

"There are no contraindications. You can't overdose on it. If you were to take it again, again and again, there are no toxic side effects from it," said Kottke.

FOX 5's Tacoma Perry asked for comments on the issue on the FOX 5 Facebook page.

Paul Spellman III wrote, "it was a sad day in our society." Destiny Carr wrote, "I seriously don't agree with it" and also feels that sexually transmitted diseases will only increase.

Dr. Kottke says however you feel about the FDA's decision, now is a good time to talk to your kids about sex. It doesn't have to be a detailed talk,  use whatever is around to you start the dialogue.

"Take this conversation and say, have you heard about that? What do you think about that? Do you know how it can be used? What's happening in your relationships? What's happening in your friendship circles? There should be no missed opportunities for parents and young people to have these conversations," Kottke said.

Kottke says research shows that the vast majority of young teens aren't sexually active.
