Illinois has nation`s highest gas prices

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The pain at the pump for Illinois drivers, especially in Chicago, is getting worse.

A recent spike in gas prices has Chicago drivers paying the highest prices in the U.S., averaging $4.36 in the city. People who live in the suburbs are being hit with an average price of $4.26.

The average price across the state is $3.95, meaning Chicago pays 75 cents more per gallon than the rest of the country.

Every year, the EPA mandates Chicago-area stations to switch from winter to summer blend gas, and it's more expensive for refineries to produce.

Analysts tend to disagree on when pump prices may come down. One says we'll see some relief in a couple of weeks, while another says they may not fall until after the Fourth of July.
