NEWARK, Del. -

Two people were arrested on drug and weapons charges after Delaware State Police say they found thousands of dollars worth of heroin in a Newark hotel room.

According to state police, 21-year-old Khaliq Scott and Amber Hoopes, 22, both of Wilmington, were arrested Wednesday.

Police say around 1:20 a.m. Wednesday morning, officers entered room 253 of the Days Inn in Newark after an investigation into a reported sale of heroin in the area.

Investigators say they noticed a strong smell of marijuana and found both Hoopes and Scott inside the room.

A search of the room turned up more than 1,000 bags of heroin that police say is worth approximately $11,000 street value, along with cash and a .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun that was reported stolen.

Both Hoopes and Scott were taken into custody.
