Health officials give cleaning tips after Illinois floods

Posted: Updated:
AURORA, Ill. (Associated Press) -

Kane County Health Department officials are advising residents to follow a series of steps to protect themselves against the hazards following a flood.

Officials say residents whose private well casing has been submerged should use bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, preparing food or baby formula, until the well water has been tested. The department is providing free well testing kits to flooded private water well owners.

Officials are advising residents to throw away food that has come in contact with flood water. They suggest people wear rubber boots, gloves and goggles while they clean the affected area.

They say residents should discard items that cannot be washed and disinfected such as mattresses, pillows, baby toys and books.

Additional tips are available on the department's website.
