Wilmington police say a teenager was the driver of a car that led officers on a chase early Sunday morning.
The pursuit started around 1:40 a.m. in the area of Bowers and E. 23rd Street.
Police say officers in the area spotted a blue Hyundai Elantra blow through a stop sign. According to investigators, the vehicle fled from officers through the city's north side and broke several traffic laws.
Eventually, the car collided with a light pole near Concord Avenue and N. Market Street and severed it from its base.
Police say the driver, a 16-year-old, got out of the car and ran away but was taken into custody on the 2100 block of N. Market Street.
Officers found 4 grams of marijuana in the teen's pocket, according to police.
The driver was treated for minor injuries at Wilmington Hospital and was later arraigned and released to his parents.
The teenager faces several charges, including Reckless Driving, Speeding and Resisting Arrest, police said.
Freezing rain changes to rain through the rest of the morning. Many driving challenges. We gradually change to all rain through about noon. Sun makes a brief appearance later on. High in the lower 40s today.
One more wintry system is set to move through our area tomorrow morning. We could get about an inch of snow in Philly...a bit more to our south.
