1 killed, 1 critically injured in West Town shooting

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

One man was killed and another person was hurt in a shooting in the West Town neighborhood Sunday morning.

The shooting happened at 6:04 a.m. near Division Street and Campbell Avenue, leaving one person fatally shot in the head, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said, citing preliminary information.

Andre Velasquez, 36, of the 2100 block of North Lawndale Avenue, was killed in the shooting and was pronounced dead at about 6:35 a.m. at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Fire Media Affairs said a second person was wounded in the shooting and that both people shot were taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. However, police could not immediately confirm that a second person was shot.

Details on the circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately available as area detectives investigate.
