FOX 32 Sunday: Reporter’s Notebook: Rahm, McCarthy note crime is down

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Mayor Emanuel and Police Supt. Garry McCarthy went to a high-crime section of the South Side last week to brag a bit: murder and violence are down.

They walked along Langley near 79th Street, with the commander of the Gresham District, with dozens of other plainclothes and uniformed officers hovering nearby.

Last month, 24 additional cops were assigned to foot patrols in the neighborhood, a move that they believe is already having a huge impact.

"Shootings are down," Emanuel said. "171 fewer shootings. 65 fewer homicides, just this year alone. Property crimes are down 10%."

"We're getting a handle on the violence," McCarthy said. "The gang issue is a cultural issue. Don't expect the Police Department to fix the gang issue. That takes community. That takes all the things that the mayor is talking about. As far as changing the culture and reducing the violence, we're absolutely getting a hand on that."
