Unanswered Questions About Boy, 10, Caught On Tape With Gun

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The surveillance video of a 10-year-old boy pointing a gun at the head of a little girl was so disturbing it caused Philadelphia Police to ask for the public's help in finding the boy and the gun.

Twenty-four hours later, the incident caught on tape still had parents in the Tioga neighborhood buzzing.

"When he put the gun to that little girl's head, that was crazy," Tinze James told FOX 29.

"Obviously, I'm very concerned. First for the child," said Mark Daniels.

The 10-year-old turned himself in Thursday night along with a 13-year-old boy. They told detectives the weapon was a toy BB gun and lead police to 16th and Venango streets, where the gun was supposedly hidden. But police say no gun was found.

On Friday, a BB gun turned up in a neighbor's backyard.

"We have recovered a weapon from the general vicinity from a backyard this morning," said Lt. George McClay, of Northwest Detectives. "It hasn't been identified as the weapon involved in this incident."

Equally troubling was the fact that, minutes later, a 14-year-old took the gun from the 10-year-old and pointed at people on the 3300 block of North 16th Street. They called police.

"My grandmom, my mom, they live in this area. So I'm very concerned," Daniels said.

Parents we spoke with Friday hope police can locate the gun used in the incident and settle the issue on whether it was real or a toy. They say kids playing with guns like this, real or fake, is a concern.

"All you can hope and pray is that it really is a toy and it's really not a real gun," Daniels added.

"I would let them be in jail for a little bit, see how it feels like and they won't do that. Teach them a lesson," James said.

But Daniels disagreed. "Somebody's gotta grab them, love on them, and let them know this is the way to go... Not that way," he said.

Police say a third boy turned himself in to police Friday and is cooperating with investigators. No charges have been filed yet.

Video games may be pure fantasy, but a violent action-adventure game called "Watch Dogs" has ignited a very real debate in one South Jersey community. Watch Dog allows players to adopt the persona of a James Bond-like computer hacker, chasing an evil mastermind. People say it's chock-full of foul language, sex and violence, features dark and foreboding backdrops. The latest version, which is due out this fall may be set in Camden.
