Bob Sirott`s One More Thing about Daley`s charitable donations

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One more thing, about a news story that's very unusual here in Illinois: a politician giving money back that by law, he could have kept.

We spend a lot of time reporting on illegal use of campaign contributions, so this deserves some attention.

Former Mayor Richard M. Daley is giving $540,000 to charity. All of that money was leftover from his campaign fund.

Between speaking engagements, and various advisory positions at big corporations, Daley is probably doing quite well financially, but that hasn't stopped other politicians from grabbing every dollar for themselves.

Here's how some of the more than half a million dollars is being distributed: $150,000 to After School Matters (the charity founded by his late wife Maggie), $100,000 to the Lurie Children's Hospital, $100,000 to the women's cancer care center at Northwestern (now named after Maggie Daley), and the rest going to several other organizations including Misericordia, and Chicago police and fire department charities.

We report the bad stuff all the time, so it's nice to be able to tell you something good.

Today is Richard M. Daley's 71st birthday. Thanks for the nice gift to Chicago Mr. Mayor.
