133-year-old St. James Catholic Church to be demolished

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A 133-year old Chicago church is about to become a thing of the past. St. James Catholic Church is scheduled to be knocked down on May 1.

Parishioners took their fight to save their worship space to the very top. They have filed an appeal with the Vatican to halt the Archdiocese of Chicago's plan to demolish the Bronzeville church.

Parishioners want to rehabilitate the structure instead. They said it will cost half as much as it would to build a new church two blocks away.
