CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A rainstorm pummeling the Chicago area has ripped open a sinkhole large enough to swallow three cars, injuring one driver bad enough that he had to be hospitalized.

Chicago Police Department spokesman Mike Sullivan says the gaping hole opened up in a street on the city's South Side, near Lake Michigan.

He says the injured man was driving when the road buckled and caved in, creating a hole about 40 feet deep by 15 feet wide. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The other two cars were parked when they fell in.

Car owner Liala Gawa says she called 911 and then tried to move her car after she saw the man driving into the hole. Witnesses say it was probably too dark outside and that driver couldn't tell that part of the road was even gone.

The vehicles were eventually pulled out. Water and sewer lines were shut down in the 9600 block of Houston while city workers spent the day, trying to fix a water main that's more than 100 years old.

Flooding has also forced authorities to close sections of several major expressways around Chicago. Schools have been canceled, and several hundred flights were scrapped at O'Hare International Airport, where Thursday's storm has dumped more than 5 inches of rain.
