The Talker: What is the most important problem America is facing?

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

What do you think is the most important problem facing America right now?

That open-ended question was put to people in a nationwide Gallup poll, conducted the first week of April, before the bombings at the Boston marathon.

The most important issue, according to the poll, was the economy in general, with 24 percent.

18 percent said unemployment, 16 percent said dissatisfaction with government, 11 percent said the federal deficit and debt, and 6 percent said healthcare.

Here are the rest of the top ten:

  • 5 percent said ethics, morals, and family decline.
  • 4 percent said immigration and "illegal aliens," as they put it.
  • 4 percent said education
  • 4 percent said guns and gun-control.
  • 4 percent said the situation with North Korea.

Some of the media reports on the poll serve as examples of why not to trust every headline you read. A website called "Human Events" spun that into "Poll: Americans don't think gun control is important."

The thing is, thinking an issue is not the most important thing does not mean you think it's not important at all. There's a big difference.

The website "CNS News" did the same thing. Its headline read: "Only 4 percent of Americans think gun control is an important problem."

Erroneous headlines from obscure sources do matter. Here's why. That CNS headline was posted on the "Drudge Report" -- an influential news site that's not obscure.

Think how many people may have believed that headline.

We asked our Facebook friends what they think is America's most important problem. Our non-scientific poll looked at the first 200 comments.

20 percent of people said the biggest problem is government and politicians generally not working for the people. 9 percent said the economy and jobs, 6 percent said President Obama, 5 percent said a lack of self-reliance among regular Americans, and 4 percent cited a lack of morals and respect.
