1 injured in Archer Heights chemical spill

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One person was hospitalized Monday afternoon following a chemical spill in the Southwest Side Archer Heights neighborhood.

A Level I HazMat response was called about 12:50 p.m. for an incident in the 4800 block of South Saint Louis Avenue, an area of warehouses and light industrial businesses.

A Fire Media Affairs spokesman said there was a chemical spill in a factory— an overpour of sodium hypochloride. The chemical is widely used for its bleaching, disinfecting and oxidizing properties.

The incident occurred at Kocher Co., which supplies product for the buffing and plating industry, according to Fire Media.

According to unconfirmed dispatch reports, there was an explosion reported at the time as well.

One person was taken in fair to serious condition to Holy Cross Hospital, according to Fire Media Affairs.

The hazardous materials situation was secured about 1:35 p.m.
