Bob Sirott`s One More Thing about getting mail on Saturday

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One more thing about getting mail on Saturday.

Today, the United States Postal Service backed down on their plan to save $2 billion a year by ending Saturday delivery of first-class mail starting in August. The reason: Congress has prohibited the move.

Postal officials said that language in the latest government funding measure effectively prevents the cuts at least until October. The threat of not getting mail on Saturday hasn't exactly made a lot of us go postal.

The image of Norman Rockwell's jolly old mailman is long gone from our consciousness; replaced by a world of e-mailing, Instagramming and texting.

Now that the postman mostly brings junk mail, catalogs, and bills, it's no wonder that polls indicate most people understand and support the elimination of Saturday delivery. When was the last time you sent or received a handwritten, personal letter?

I hate the idea of postal workers or anyone else losing their jobs and I'm glad those folks will at least have more time now to prepare for inevitable layoffs. The writing is on the wall. It's not in any mail delivered on Saturday.

Remember when we used to hear, "neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds?"

As Newman, the mailman on Seinfeld said, "I was never that big on creeds."
