ATLANTA -

Hundreds of people took to the streets outside the State Capitol on Wednesday to rally for federal immigration reform. More than 40 organizations from across Georgia took part in the rally.

They say the current immigration rules breed racial profiling and spilt up families. Participants say they want the state and federal government to give them a "path to citizenship."

The marchers are demanding that authorities put a stop to deportations and implement what they call a "real immigration reform."

"We can't stand this anymore. We're wasting a lot of money on detention centers. We could close the detention centers,  incorporate them into the economy. They already pay taxes. Hopefully, they would be able to get better jobs and pay income tax too," said Lt. Col. Ed Howell, USAF, (Ret.)

The rally took place on the same day as a huge immigration reform protest is being held in Washington D.C.
