How to protect your credit report

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Most of us get a free credit report once a year. But, there's a new warning out about criminals also getting access to your private information. John Ulzheimer of Smartcredit.com stopped by Good Day Atlanta on Tuesday with some tips on how you can protect your credit report.

How can you avoid this?

You can only claim ONE report per credit bureau from that site every 12 months.  That means if YOU go in and claim your own the fraudster won't be able to do so.  Yet another reason to make sure you claim your freebies!

If you feel like your credit report is at risk there are some free and cheap options:

1.  You can monitor your Experian credit report for free at CreditSesame.com
2.  You can monitor your TransUnion credit report for free at CreditKarma.com
3.  You can "freeze" your credit reports and lock out any fraudsters or creditors and the cost is extremely nominal for GA residents...$3 per credit report...that's $9 total.  Not a bad deal for peace of mind.
