Drexel Hill Residents Worry About Gas Leak

Posted: Updated:

On a night like Monday night, many people would love to have their windows open but not in one Drexel Hill neighborhood. There's a gas leak on their block that's been worrying them for a couple of weeks.

"I've felt headaches and a couple of neighbors said they had as well," said Victoria Anderson. She's been feeling sick and uneasy about the gas leak on her block of Irvington Road. It's been kicking up a strong smell there on the first half of the street.

"We have little kids in the area and the weather is getting nicer so I don't feel like it's safe to be outside," said Victoria.

A sudden burst of spring weather brought many neighbors outside Monday. But Victoria won't let her children James and Audrey play in their own front yard because of the smell.

She said, "We've been down towards my parents house. They live a couple doors down and there's not too much of a gas smell down that way. So we've been hanging out down there a lot."

Peco workers have been monitoring the problem. In fact workers put holes in the ground to ventilate the leak. Peco says air quality readings measured gas more than 30 feet away from the closest homes. Anything within five feet would mean urgent repairs.

Paula Ferraro had her kids outside. She's happy to hear the problem isn't dangerous right now  just a nuisance.

"When you walk around the corner you just get hit with the smell of gas. It's pretty intense," said Ferraro.

Based on air quality readings Peco initially said the line would be fixed within a year and that the levels aren't high enough to be considered an emergency. Now we hear it could be fixed within a month after more neighbors complained. Peco doesn't know yet what's causing the leak.
