SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Kids' Opening Day happens at Comerica Park on April 7, and to celebrate kids living healthy, the Tigers and Blue Cross Blue Shield sponsored an essay contest.  We were inspired by one of the winners.

"The bride's dad (is) supposed to walk her down the aisle, and I (want) my dad to live long enough so he (can) walk down the aisle with me," said Emily Moore.

The eight-year-old is pretty convincing.  Her winning essay included her daily exercise plan and even more personal, her message about her dad.

"My dad has had diabetes since 2007, but he made a promise to me that he would stay healthy," she said.

Jeff Moore does admit to struggling at times with managing his diabetes.

"There's a lack of energy.  Also vision gets worse.  When I was eating bad on a regular basis, I (could) tell how bad it (was) just by looking at the TV and reading small words," he said.

However, he is encouraged by his daughter.

"My daughter said I got to be around to walk her down the aisle, and that kind of has a big impact," he explained.

"Now he's (eating) salads and apples and fruit and vegetables and stuff," Emily said.

This contest is just part of something much bigger happening at the ballpark on Kids' Opening Day.  The idea is to teach kids and their families lifelong lessons about being healthy.

Emily is now preparing for her job at the game and keeping dad on track.

But even if you are not going to the game, you can sit down and come up with your own family plan on how your are going to live healthy.
