DETROIT (WJBK) -

The Detroit Tigers have signed Jose Valverde to a minor league contract.

According to the Tigers Twitter account, the 35-year-old closer will report to Lakeland, the team's Single-A affiliate.

Valverde lost his job late last season and remained on the free agent market throughout the offseason.

The moves comes one day after the Tigers bullpen struggled in a ninth-inning loss to the Minnesota Twins.

Valverde was the team's closer from 2010-2012. During that stretch he saved 110 regular season games. His postseason performance in October, however, was anything but stellar. In only 2.2 innings, Valverde allowed nine earned runs, including two home runs.

We'll have much more on this story tonight during FOX 2 News beginning at 5 p.m.
