Ald. Reilly pushes for more police downtown after Mag Mile melee

CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

A Chicago alderman wants the police department to add officers to the city's famed Michigan Avenue after a large group of young people jostled shoppers and tourists and fought each other in the shopping district last weekend.

As the weather improves and streets near the lakefront become more crowded, Alderman Brendan Reilly told the Chicago Sun-Times that the sight of more officers on the streets and on public transit would discourage incidents like those on Saturday. In addition to the fight, a woman was attacked on a downtown train.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says police have already beefed up their presence in the area, particularly on weekends and at night. He says police reacted quickly in both incidents, with officers making more than two dozen arrests.
