CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Chicago police officer and three male "offenders" were being treated for minor injuries after a police chase on the South Side ended with a crash late Tuesday.

The chain of events was put in motion about 11:30 p.m., when police pulled over a vehicle with three males inside near the 7700 block of South Sangamon in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, police said.

At some point during the stop the driver of the vehicle sped away.

Police chased the vehicle for more than five miles, tearing southeast across the South Side, police said.

What caused the wreck remains unclear, but in the 8600 block of South Kingston Avenue the fleeing vehicle crashed into a backyard, landing on its side, police said. A police vehicle also crashed at the same location.

The three "offenders" inside the fleeing vehicle were all taken to area hospitals for treatment of non life-threatening injuries, said police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro. The officer was treated for minor injuries and released.

Charges against the three are pending.
