Poll reveals Americans believe a lot of conspiracy theories

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Recent poll results from Public Policy Polling reveal a partisan divide when it comes to conspiracy theory beliefs involving a wide range of issues—from the Iraq War and the moon landing to other bizarre philosophies like shape-shifting lizards.

According to the poll, 44% of voters believe the Bush administration intentionally misled the public about weapons of mass destruction to promote the Iraq War, while 45% disagree. 72% of Democrats believed the statement while 73% of Republicans did not.

Was Saddam Hussein involved in the 9/11 terrorist attacks? 22% of Democrats, 33% of Republicans and 28% of independents believe that Hussein was indeed involved. Just 6% of voters think Osama bin Laden is still alive.

On the more surprising side, PPP found that 28% of voters believe that secretive power elite with a globalist agenda is conspiring to eventually rule the world through an authoritarian world government or a New World Order.

Also somewhat startling, are the results for those who believe that President Obama is the "anti-Christ:" 13% of Americans, including 22% of Romney voters, PPP notes.

Other conspiracy theory poll results:

- 29% of voters believe aliens exist

- 14% of voters say the CIA was instrumental in creating the crack cocaine epidemic in America's inner cities in the 1980's

- 9% of voters think the government adds fluoride to our water supply for sinister reasons (not just dental health)

- 4% of voters say they believe "lizard people" control our societies by gaining political power

- 51% of voters say a larger conspiracy was at work in the JFK assassination, just 25% say Oswald acted alone

- 14% of voters believe in Bigfoot

- 15% of voters say the government or the media adds mind-controlling technology to TV broadcast signals (the so-called Tinfoil Hat crowd)

- 5% believe exhaust seen in the sky behind airplanes is actually chemicals sprayed by the government for sinister reasons

- 15% of voters think the medical industry and the pharmaceutical industry "invent" new diseases to make money

- Just 5% of voters believe that Paul McCartney actually died in 1966

The survey polled 1,247 registered American voters from March 27 to March 30.
