17 arrested after melee erupts on Mag Mile

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago Police took several individuals into custody after a large group of young people created disturbances along the Magnificent Mile on Saturday evening.

Seventeen  arrests were made after officers responded to a "disturbance" near Chicago and Michigan avenues about 6 p.m. They came across "a number of kids fighting amongst themselves," said police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.

At one point there were more than 150 teenagers moving down Michigan Avenue and side streets causing the disturbances.

By the time the fight was broken up, 15 juveniles and two adults were arrested, police said.

All were charged with one count of misdemeanor reckless conduct, police said.

It was the first warm night in a while and police believe that could have played a role in why so many teens gathered on Michigan Avenue. A mob-style environment developed and police were forced to shut down streets near Chicago and Wabash.

Aside from the group fighting amongst themselves, there were no additional assaults, robberies or reports of property damage, police said.

In the words of one police officer at the scene, "It's the same thing we saw last summer; mobs of young people causing problems."
