Georgia woman's camera lost in 2007 washes ashore in Taiwan

A Georgia woman is being reunited with a camera she lost in Hawaii back in 2007. After floating in the ocean for more than five years, the camera washed up on a beach in Taiwan – with the pictures intact!

Lindsay Scallan told FOX 5 that she's surprised by the worldwide attention she's received since word of her camera's journey has spread.

"I can't believe this is happening to me, of all people in the world.  Why is this happening to me?  I think it's amazing and I feel blessed to be a part of it for whatever reason this is happening," said Scallan.

Scallan said that she was scuba diving in the Pacific Ocean when she got hit by a big current.

"In the midst of all this confusion, my camera slipped off my wrist because I had it attached with a strap," she said.

Protected by a waterproof case, her Canon Sure Shot camera, bobbed along in the Pacific Ocean until it washed ashore in Taiwan.

An employee with China Airways opened it to find the camera in excellent shape -- and so were the images on the memory card.

Through news stories, Lindsay was identified as the owner.

"The odds of the pictures still being there and then tracking me down half a world away is unbelievable," Lindsay said.

Now China Airways has offered Lindsay and a friend to fly for free to Taiwan, all other expenses completely paid.  She will meet the man who found the camera, and he will give it back to her.

"It says that there still some kind-hearted people out there and that care about things. And it also says a lot of about today's technology and social media," said Lindsay.

A TV station in Hawaii did a story on the camera that someone in Georgia somehow saw. That person recognized Lindsay as someone they went to high school with. They contacted her through Facebook.
